Influence of Boronizing on Steel Performance under Erosion-Abrasion-Corrosion Conditions Simulating Downhole Oil Production

Downhole heavy oil production and sand processing are associated with severe damage failures of equipment components, e.g., tubing pumping systems, due to erosion-corrosion resulting in losses, downtime, high maintenance replacement cost. Protective coatings (layers) on the components mostly fabricated from low-alloy steels can be applied minimize these problems. In present work, performance hard boronized coating carbon steel obtained through thermal diffusion process consisted two iron boride layers (FeB Fe2B) was studied synergistic erosion-abrasion-corrosion conditions simulating environment comparison bare steel. Special wear testing designed fabricated. this testing, inner surface tubular sections subjected velocity erosive flows water-oil slurries containing silica salts combined rotating oscillating motions pony rods. Structural examination materials’ surfaces their profilometry after were conducted. The demonstrated significantly higher abrasion compared its hardness, chemical inertness, dual-layer architecture diffusion-induced bonding substrate. casing protection effectively employed most critical operation conditions.
